Mission statement and history

The Seattle/King County Coalition for the Homeless (SKCCH) was formed in 1979 and is one of the oldest homeless coalitions in the country. We are a coalition of organizations and individuals working together to provide adequate and appropriate emergency responses, address the causes and break the cycle of homelessness.

Our current focus is threefold:

1.  Guarantee the availability of safe shelter for all;
2.  Increase the supply of affordable housing; and
3.  Ensure all homeless people and those at risk receive relevant support services.

Current Priorities

In 2004, SKCCH members are committed to taking concrete actions to end homelessness. We will strive towards this vision by way of the following activities:

  • By advocating for stable adequate service funding for all populations from local, State, and Federal levels;

  • By taking a lead role in planning processes to end homelessness in King County;

  • By significantly increasing voting activity among people who are homeless and/or poor by way of voter participation campaigns and advocating for voter rights and responsibilities.

  • By engaging membership that reflects the racial and geographical diversity of the homeless community.
  • By educating the community about the human and economic costs of homelessness, and strategies to end homelessness in our community.

  • Share expertise, initiate action, and participate in discussions regarding a range of issues
  • Organize and expand the One Night Count of people who are homeless in King County
  • Provide 2,170 homeless children with Project Cool school supplies
